Hi all

Looking for some advice.

I did a photoshoot for one of my models for her prom as a return favour for her helping me with some dance photography.

The images are great and they have sparked a lot of interest for this years grads parents and I have had a number of enquiries asking how much I charge etc.

I honestly haven’t set a fee before for my services but it’s going to be about an hour of shooting per session.

Is £50 about right?

What are your actual costs? What do they expect in the ways of prints or images? How much time is involved after the shoot, editing (if any) and whatnot? How will people see their images - DropBox or via website, etc. and are there additional costs for that? Where will you shoot? Are shoots sequential (one after another, conveyer belt fashion) in one location or are you travelling to people's homes and doing several in a day?

Work out all the logistics and associated costs before deciding an hourly rate.

You may find £50 an hour doesn't leave you a great deal for your efforts...

Yes very good point. I have all the equipment required and location wise all fairly local home/garden set ups and no great amount of effort. I would spend time editing the images and use my existing Dropbox account.

It's interesting I did something similar for a local sport club. A couple of suggestions (which was something a full time dance photographer suggested to me) was get your conveyor belt set up (I'd say an hour per person is way too long) shoot three or four poses and then charge for providing eg two high res images (not prints) maybe £50.  This is just an example, you need to flex the variables to come up with an amount you are happy with and that is attractive to parents to purchase. 

The other model is to work out how many people want their photo taken and quote a total amount to be split between all parents for x many images per child. That way you are definitely getting your money rather than hoping a parent will pay for the images, it's amazing how many all of a sudden change their minds.  (So if you are going down the pay per image route as much as I dislike watermarks generally, put a dirty great "draft" across the image, although with AI removal even that isn't the deterrent it used to be)
